Breguet at Hamilton Jewelers
Abraham-Louis Breguet opened his workshop in Paris in 1775 and went on to invent more of the modern watch than anyone before or since. He patented the tourbillon in 1801, devised the self-winding perpétuelle watch, the gong spring for repeaters and the shock-absorbing pare-chute, and gave his watches the engine-turned dials, blued pomme hands and coin-edged cases that still identify a Breguet at a glance. His clients included Marie-Antoinette and Napoleon, and the watch he made for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, is considered the first wristwatch.
Hamilton stocks Breguet across its collections. The Classique carries the guilloché dials and hand-engraved details of the founder's work, including calendar and retrograde models. The Marine is the house's sports watch in rose gold and titanium, with chronograph versions. The Type XX is the flyback chronograph descended from the watches Breguet made for French naval aviation. The Tradition exposes the movement architecture on the dial side, and the Reine de Naples is the oval ladies' watch named for Caroline Murat. These are watches for people who care about the history inside the case.
A Breguet rewards close looking, and the guilloché and hand finishing are best seen in person.
