The Mercer cable chain comes in 1.1mm to 1.5mm gauges and 16 or 18 inch lengths, a fine chain for a small pendant or a layered stack. Serif oval link and graduated link necklaces in 18k yellow gold are heavier pieces meant to be worn alone. Long-link chains in 2.6mm, 3.8mm, and 7.9mm widths suit charms and a more sculptural look. If you are buying for someone else, a 16 inch chain sits at the collarbone and an 18 inch chain falls just below it.
